More than 20 friends and classmates of a former University of Saskatchewan student charged in connection to a chemical threat at the school quietly celebrated his release from custody Thursday afternoon.

They were at Saskatoon Provincial Court in support of Mohamadmahdi Kowsari. The 25 year old spent more than a month in police custody after being charged with theft under $5,000 on Oct. 23.

Details from his bail hearing are banned from publication. He's accused of stealing a vial of sulfuric acid from the university, which police found in his home on Cumberland Avenue North.

The search followed a threat Kowsari allegedly made involving the mixing of two potentially dangerous chemicals that he did not have permission to use. Members of the hazmat unit were called out and the U of S chemical engineering lab was temporarily evacuated.

No one was hurt in the incident.

Kowsari will be back in court on Dec. 12.

He's also suspended from his classes and banned from being on the U of S campus. A hearing on that matter has been set for Dec. 9.

Kowsari's supporters, mostly members of Saskatoon's Persian community, were all smiles outside the courthouse.

Many said they were "very happy" about his release.
